Five reasons to travel to Cyprus

It's is cold in here, and the woodburner chimney seems to be leaking, so rather than sit coughing in a roomful of smoke, I have sparked up one of our lovely new Gisela Graham mini hot water bottles and started looking for a summer holiday.

Normally we go to Greece, but following our last chicken pox-ridden stay, I thought I would look further afield, and ended up researching Cyprus instead.

Here are five very good reasons to go that I can think of.

1. Ooh, the archaeology. Amphitheatres, baths, mosaics and temples abound, and they are all much sunnier than Roman Bath.

2. The coffee. Cypriot coffee is drunk strong and dark, rather like Espresso, and is guaranteed to perk you up. If the sun is hot, try a cool frappe instead.

3. Hire a boat in Latsi; forget the tacky tourist trips and sail off yourself with a hearty picnic to the Blue Lagoon.

4. Enjoy the grape. The Lemesos Wine Festival is held every September, and thousands of visitors bask in the last of the lovely summer warmth whilst quaffing a little local red.

5. Eat yourself silly. Visitors are no longer restricted to the local tavernas, as high-end restaurants now aboud, with everything from Japanese to Polynesian food available.

Right, I'm convinced that next year Cyprus holidays are the ones to check out... I'm off to ditch the hot water bottle and find my sunnies.
